WHO WE ARE
dv2mp4 is a small, independent service built by people who still love MiniDV and Sony VX camcorders: skate clips, family holidays, birthdays, first gigs. When we digitised our own tapes, the results were choppy, full of jagged lines and squashed out of shape. So we built the converter we wanted for our own footage, and opened it up to everyone.
CONVERT A TAPEA DV camcorder doesn't record whole pictures. It records fields: half-pictures made of every other line, 50 a second (60 in the USA and Japan). On an old TV that looked silky smooth.
On a phone or computer it doesn't. A typical converter either glues two fields together, which gives the comb-like jagged lines you see on anything moving, or throws one away and keeps only 25 frames a second, so half of the movement is simply lost.
We do neither. Every field becomes its own full frame, so you get all 50 moments per second, sharp and smooth, just like the tape looked on a TV.
We check its system (PAL at 25 frames or NTSC at 30), its field order (DV records the lower field first) and the shape of its pixels, so nothing is guessed.
Our deinterlacer (bwdif) rebuilds each half-picture into a full one by looking at the fields just before and after it. The result is smooth 50p (60p for NTSC), with no jagged lines and no ghosting.
DV pixels aren't square, which is why converted tapes often look squashed or stretched. We resize to 768×576 square pixels with high-quality Lanczos scaling, so people look like people. There's no upscaling and no AI-invented detail: just everything that's really on your tape.
You get a standard MP4 (H.264) with clear 48 kHz stereo audio. It plays on any phone or computer and uploads straight to YouTube, Instagram or your editing app.
Every tape gets a free preview. First we show you the fastest-moving moment of your own tape, a typical conversion against ours, then you can watch the whole thing in our quality. Only if you like it do you unlock the clean download, at full length, untrimmed and without a watermark.
